السلام عليكم

I think I read this somewhere once:

وَ كَانَ فِى هَذَا الْبَيْتِ أَصْنَامٌ

I'm wondering why it's not كَانَتْ because the subject is أصنام which is a non-human plural, which will be dealt with as singular feminine. Right?
