Please find below a conversation between two people.

The question is in the response of, "What is your name?". How would you classify the reply of خالد considering that the sentence must either be a nominal or a verbal sentence. As per usual, provide reasoning to support your point.

السلام عليكم

As the question has been asked: 'What is your name?', therefore it is not necessary to say 'Khalid is my name' as just replying 'Khalid' is sufficient in this context. So I think:
خالد = could be the مبتدأ in the nominal sentence 'Khalid is my name' and the predicate اسمي has been omitted.

However as we have not yet come across definite predicates, I would say that خالد could be the predicate instead e.g. in the sentence اسمي خالد 'My name is Khalid' the subject اسمي does not necessarily have to be used as we know what is being asked about from the question itself.

However, we have not ever come across omitted subject (مبتدأ محذوف) either!

In conclusion, the answer is a nominal sentence, as the question posed does not require an answer containing an action (verb), the question remains as to which way around the predicate/subject is, as both seem possible. But personally I will go with my original analysis of omitted predicate, as this is most closest to what we have been taught.

مع السلامة

Assalamu Alaikum

We were asked a similar question in class...If we make it into the nominal sentence form, it would be 'the X is Y'; therefore 'My (the) name IS Khalid'. Therefore Khalid is the Khabar (predicate) and the Mubtada' (Subject) is omitted.

Please correct me if I am wrong

For a full analysis;

"name" here is the subject and possessed.
"my" here this is the possessor
"Khalid" here would be the predicate.
