Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

I just wanted to share a part from another email that was sent to me today, the message was a very humbling one maashaa' Allah,

Rasulullah (SallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallama) said:

"Do not seek knowledge to compete with the scholars,
nor to argue with the foolish people,
nor to gain control of gatherings;
for whoever does that - the Fire, the Fire!"
(Reported in Bayhaqi)

Wassalaam

It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it. - Arnold Toynbee

hmmm...sounds familiar....

The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink - George Orwell

...hmmm...I'm still trying to figure that one out.

...Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O' no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken...

- Shakespeare

(The best thing about quotes are you can fit them into different contexts and situations and they always bring to focus different angles of the subject or thought process. I think of this quote a lot to measure my determination for whatever it is then I'm trying to reach...)

From my understanding, it's saying 'When the writer is hiding his real intentions, you see him resorting to waffle and cliches, typically - a waste of ink on paper.'

'Men who have attained things worth having in this world have worked while others idled, have preserved when others gave up in despair, have practiced early in life the valuable habits of self-denial, industry, and singleness of purpose. As a result, they enjoy in later life the success so often erroneously attributed to good luck'

السلام عليكم

I'm just reading something at the moment - first inventor of functional clocks was the great Muslim Engineer Al-Jazari from Diyarbikir in South Turkey. In 1206, he created the 'Elephant clock' comprising of six different inter-continental devices of measuring Time, amongst these or so I've read - were the Greek 'Clepysdras Water Clock', and the Indian 'Perforated Controlled Sinking Water Bowl.' Al-Jazari was a strong follower of the Arabic proverb:

الوقت كالسيف إن لم تقطعه قطعك

Translation: Time is like the sword, unless you cut with it - it will cut you...

(I realised with a smile that this was one of the first Arabic quotes I was ever exposed to regarding the Sword, and it was not only Time that became سيفي...)

مع السلامة

Just a little something I say to myself...

Remember, Standard Bearers will always be called ‘Strangers.’

Hadith of ‘Ghuraba’
Abu Huraiyra (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Prophet said: Islam started as something strange, and it shall return as it started, therefore give glad tidings to the strangers. Muslim Kitab-ul-Iman (1/84)

...The willingness to be different
is an essential quality of leadership...

قال حكيم

إذا ادخرت المال فأنا بخيل

إذا أضعته فأنا متلاف

إذا شقيت حتى جمعته فأنا مادي

إذا لم اصل إليه على الأطلاق فأنا فاشل

A Wiseman said:
If I store up wealth, I am a stingy.
If I waste it, I am a wastrel.
If I suffer to gather it, I am a materialist.
If I don't ever reach it, I am a loser.

This is surely the Truth;

A true action leads to the path of virtue and good deeds, and virtue paves the way of a person to Paradise, and the said person continues to speak the truth till in the sight of Allah he is named Siddiq or Truthful. Lying leads to vice, and vice leads to indecent acts and if a person goes on lying till in the sight of Allah he is named a liar.
——— The Prophet (s) as reported by Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (r) in Bukhari and Muslim.

A lie will easily get you out of a scrape, and yet, strangely and beautifully, rapture possesses you when you have taken the scrape and left out the lie.
~Charles Edward Montague, Disenchantment

If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember what you said.

——— Mark Twain.

“Nowadays some (learned ones) suffer under the deception that delivering a speech in Arabic is a great excellence and a source of pride. I maintain that no matter how eloquent you become in Arabic and even if you become Abul ‘Ilm (the father of knowledge), you will not be able to converse in Arabic as Abu Jahl had. If only knowledge of Arabic and ability to speak in Arabic were ‘ilm, then Abu Jahl would be a greater Aalim. But, in spite of the superiority of his Arabic, he remained Abu Jahl (the father of the ignorant).”

Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi
