جزء عمّ - سورة الاخلاص

بسم الله الرحمن الريم

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
اللَهُ الصَّمَدُ
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفْواً أَحَدٌ*

* لَّهُ و actually has a و after it like this.

مع السلامة

قُلْ - say
هُوَ اللَّه – He is Allah
أَحَدٌ- One
اللَهُ الصَّمَدُ – Allah is the independent*
لَمْ يَلِدْ – [he does] not beget
وَلَمْ يُولَدْ- nor [is he] begotten
وَلَمْ يَكُن – and there is not
لَّهُ- to him
كُفْواً- comparable
أَحَدٌ – [any]one

* الصَّمَدُ describes the idea of Allah being independent of anything whilst everything is dependent upon him

I really love this Surah...سبحان الله
By the way Nuj, you've translated it 'Allah is' implying that it is a nominal sentence; that الصَّمَدُ (independent) is the predicate here, - but then shouldn't the predicate have been indefinite according to what we've learnt so far? I think it's a noun-adjective phrase here, i.e. 'Allah the Independent...'

ohh, yes, your absolutely correct.

So the correct translation is 'Allah the Independent' ...?

Well, according to Al-Mawrid,

صَمَدٌ = eternal, perpetual, sempeternal, everlasting
The root verb is صَمَدَ = he withstood, endured, lasted

For this reason, I would translate it 'Allah the Eternal'

i.e. Eternal in that Allah is beyond the realm of time; he is dependent on neither man nor woman nor jinn nor angel to supplement his existence; that he has lasted through every age and will continue to do so. In that sense, I can see your description of 'Independent' fitting in very well, as the next verse goes on to talk about the fact that he is neither begotten neither does he beget. He is the Creator of Us (Mankind) - and in order to engender that title, he must have to have 'been','be' and 'will be' - in other words, he must be Ever-lasting.
